Jealous of his brother, the ailing King Edward IV, and determined to gain the crown for himself, Richard plots to remove anyone in his way. Vicious deeds ensue as Richard has his brother, Clarence, assassinated and then after King Edward's death, imprisons his sons while spreading rumors of their illegitimacy. Richard's enemies are soon sent to thier deaths and he is crowned king. Loyalties become divided and civil war threatens. Meanwhile in France, Richmond is gathering the forces to challenge and ultimately defeat Richard in the battle at Bosworth Field. In the end, Richmond is crowned Henry VII and goes on to lead England to a time of "smooth-faced peace".
